Does your life feel scattered, frantic and out of control? Are you forgetful and disorganized? If you’ve answered “yes” to any, or to all of these questions, take a look at your home. Is everything tidy and in its place?
When Late Show host Stephen Colbert asked Japanese tidying-up guru Marie Kondo why she thinks she is so popular, she replied: “I think it’s because we not only have clutter in our homes, but we also have clutter in our hearts.”
Research has shown that a cluttered space can also mean clutter in our minds, and when the mess gets out of hand, it could lead to mental health issues.
Did you know that organizing offers tons of great mental health benefits such as improved sleep, reduced stress and anxiety, improved relationships and could even help you to lose weight?!
Apart from ridding your space of stuff that you no longer use, need or love, organizing also provides a great sense of satisfaction. The transformation – before and after – offers visual, tangible proof of a job well done. We feel good, proud, accomplished.
With a lot remaining virtual these days, a hands-on project at home (or at work) can give us the boost we need to feel good about our accomplishments. It’s a way to regain control. There is so much in the world that we can’t control, but we can control our stuff and spaces when we feel overwhelmed with life. Also, like exercising, the physical effort to sort and organize your space provides a way to let off steam. It’s a productive way to boost your mental health and manage stress.
But wait, with the demands of daily life (laundry! groceries! kids! deadlines!) Who has time for that?
According to Kondo, only two skills are necessary to successfully put your house in order: the ability to keep what sparks joy and chuck the rest, the ability to decide where to keep each thing you choose and always to put it back in its place.
However, if you view tidying and organizing as a big project, you’re more likely to keep putting it off. So, start small. Take 15 to 20 minutes each evening to put things back where they belong, clear counters and prepare yourself and your family for an easy start in the morning.
Imagine feeling calmer and happier because you living space is tidy. Such an easy fix for so much mental and emotional benefit, right?
The first step in crafting the life you want is to get rid of everything that you don’t want.
